John Coultrap
MBIYC Commodore 2003-2004

Taken from the 2003-2004 MBIYC Yearbook

John was born and raised in Akron, Ohio. He began his boating interest in1959, aboard a family friend's 1941 vintage all-wood sailboat during the summer months in Port Clinton. From this experience and the years that followed, his love for boating has continued through today.

John also had an interest in flying, adopted during his combat service in Vietnam (66-67) with the US Army, aboard various military aircraft. As a result and following graduation from college, he entered flight training in 1973. After completing several schools for various ratings, including twin engine competency, he earned his commercial pilot's license in 1974 and flew for a local charter company, part time.

During John's early years at Goodyear, he met his wife of 35 years, Mary Ann. They have four children, John III, Jennifer, Christine and Cathleen; and three grandchildren. John III is an international banker living and working in France with his wife and two children, Camille and James. Jennifer is a elementary school teacher in the Akron Public Schools and is currently working to earn her masters in education. Christine is a nurse at Akron City Hospital and Cathleen is a newly graduated psychology major, married, with one daughter, Nina.

John and Mary Ann have been boating since 1969 and presently sail a Hunter 33 named "La Plume" (French, for "The Feather"). They have been members of MBIYC since 1995. John has served the membership as a member of a nominating committee, director, Vice Commodore and Dock Committee Chairman. He also served the Lake Erie South Shore Sailing Association, Station 7, as Vice Commodore (1996) and Commodore (1997), as a charter member.

John, currently retired and Mary Ann employed as a elementary teacher in the Akron Pubic Schools, reside in Fairlawn, Ohio. They have enjoyed many wonderful adventures aboard their boat during the summer months. Their favorite trips have been to the North Channel of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

John's dedicated service to the membership of MBIYC has been of pride and concern for the longevity of the organization for now and in the future.
