Lew Johnson
MBIYC Commodore 1995-1996
Taken from the
1997-1998 MBIYC Yearbook
Lew was born in Washington
D.C. and grew up in the Maryland - D.C. area, spending time on the Potomac River
and Chesapeake Bay when possible. He and a friend built a flat bottom boat (POGO
comic style) and then a small outboard runabout for use on the Potomac River.
Lew and Marty met at the
University of Maryland and were married at their graduation in 1958. They have
two children: son, Lew, married with two sons living in Gainesville FL and a
daughter, Kate, single and living near Philadelphia, PA.
After college, Lew and
Marty lived on Staten Island, NY for three years while Lew was in the U.S. Coast
Guard, serving two years aboard ship and one year shore duty. Marty started her
career in Dietetics during this time.
After the Coast Guard, Lew
went to work for the Campbell Soup Company in Camden, NJ and then transferred to
their Napoleon, Ohio plant in 1965 where he was in charge of Quality Control for
the container manufacturing operation. Lew retired from Campbell Soup, April
1995. Marty continued her career in dietetics and is currently chairman of the
Dietetics Program at Owens Community College.
Boating is their primary
hobby, especially sailing. In Ohio they initially owned a 14' Rhodes Bantam and
then obtained their present 30' sailboat, "FREEDOM"! Lew and Marty crew on other
racing sailboats and assist in running sailboat regattas. They are looking
forward to Marty retiring and taking an "epic voyage" down the Inter-Coastal
Waterway and back.
Lew and Marty enjoy Middle
Bass Island and the surrounding islands. It is a unique boating area with many
pleasant destinations and friendly people.
Lew says it was a very
satisfying experience to have been Commodore during such an exciting period of
growth for MBIYC. So good luck to Larry and Barb and remember as Bob Bowles said
earlier, "in times of trouble call George... the Club was his idea!" |
