Larry Uland
MBIYC Commodore 1997-1998
Taken from the
1997-1998 MBIYC Yearbook
Larry was born in
Bloomington, IN and attended many schools, in as much as his father was a
minister. He was boating at an early age. When he was eleven years old, he
decided to build a boat, by himself. After putting on the finishing touches, he
called for Mom and Sister to join him for the first ride. They got about out
about 100 yards. It started taking on water - a lot of water! They got out and
walked back to shore. The boat was never to be seen again, and he never built
another one.
Larry was employed in
management by J.C. Penney for twelve years in Seattle, WA and in Toledo, OH.
Starting his own business in 1976, an independent auto parts store in Pioneer,
OH, led to his now operating four stores. His sons Jerry and Jeff,
daughter-in-law Diana, nephew Mike, and wife Barbara work as a team in this
enterprise, along with other great employees. Some how, Larry keeps trying to
slip away more often, saying he has trained them well and he isn't needed as
much now. May it be his interest in cruising is taking more of his time?
The Ulands have been
boating on Lake Erie since 1958. Last year they undertook a 1,100-plus mile
cruise in two weeks, with the Weisenbach's, Kah's and Lentz's. There are many
stories to tell. Obviously, a great time was had.
They have resided in a
small lake in Pioneer, OH since 1973, and try to get to Ft. Myers often to enjoy
the Florida boating waters - perhaps not as often as Larry would like though,
especially in the winter.
Middle Bass Island Yacht
Club came into their lives in 1993. The club's energy and positive attitude has
kept him volunteering and not learning to say no! He is very proud to have been
Commodore of such a great and hard working membership.
