This page is where the Bridge will post information to help keep members informed of plans and happenings at the management level and to bridge the communications gap between membership meetings and newsletters. Commodore 2/21/12 FROM THE DESK OF THE COMMODORE - 2/21/2012 Bridge Notes - February, early March 2012 What a great time at the MBIYC Land Cruise. Weekend started on Friday night with a get together at the Port Clinton Islands Hotel. Next, Saturday afternoon Sandusky Yacht Club for drinks and appetizers. CIC Saturday night for dinner, a short meeting and dancing. Sunday morning finale was brunch at CIC. A great weekend thanks to my wife Carol for organizing. Also thanks to CIC and Sandusky YC. This article is a little late due to rearranged meetings, events and several other obstacles. My goal is to get you information after our board meeting and next month (March) we’re scheduled for the 15th. Check the website the following week and updates should be posted. MBIYC’s 2012 budget was presented and approved at the Land Cruise. The budget committee, with much research into all the expenses related to our new facility, created an excellent plan focusing not only on this year but the future. Your board is also taking steps, looking at where we can be more cost effective and if it makes sense, adjust. At the Land Cruise we announced the new dockmasters for 2012. Don Massey will be our Head Dock Master. Don and his wife live outside of Ann Arbor MI. but during the summer have a home on the island. Don is a retired business owner with a boating background and also coach’s hockey. He is very excited about the opportunity and anxious to meet the members and dockers. Austin Halderman will be Don’s assistant. Austin is from North Ridgeville and his parents have a place on the island. We will be hiring another person to round out the team. Check the website as the season begins for more information on our new dockmasters. After much discussion we will be rolling out a Key Card system for the clubhouse. Rear Commodore Tony Dolejs has been working hard on this project and created a rollout plan for issuing cards. This process will take time and we’ll make sure to explain the program to all of you along with the opportunity to get keys this spring and through the summer. It’s important to protect our investment for our members and guests. The grill pavilion is being discussed and at the Land Cruise, Director Rodney Brown brought in architectural drawings of the area with several concepts. The project requires approval from the state along with building permits. The two concepts being considered are, one with a metal cover similar to a carport and the other being a framed structure. The Board, Planning Committee and Past Commodores are working together with a design that will match our building, serve our members and fall within budget. This project is being funded by the Past Commodores' fund raising efforts and with your support on the raffles, we can make this project a reality. Membership renewal is strong but we still have a few who either did not get an invoice or lost them. If you are one of those, contact Treasurer Norm Kuesel and we’ll get a replacement sent. treasurer@mbiyc.com Can you help us with Entertainment or the Cruises? Not that hard, you get your work hours, meet some great people, plus help the club. Email me and we’ll get you signed up. commodore@mbiyc.com Check the website for updates. Thanks and let’s hope for an early spring. Commodore Don Stouder FROM THE DESK OF THE COMMODORE - 1/16/2012 Happy New Year, Can you believe its winter? Warmer than usual through first portion of January and finally winter hit. Predictions still looks like a warmer than normal winter. Early launch? Here is what is being discussed by the board in January. Dock Master and Docks: Art has received numerous applications which several are highly qualified people and a few are islanders. Art plans final interviews in the next couple of weeks and by the end of January we will have a decision. Docks will be covered well this year. Once a decision is made we will post on the website plus announce at the Land Cruise. Most all of our dock holders are returning this year and a few boats changed spots due to dock and boat size. Seems boats are getting larger. Thanks all dock holders for getting your contracts in on time. Again Art plans a Dock Holder Meeting Memorial Day Weekend. Currently we have eight ILYA groups coming to visit our club this year. As spring approaches we anticipate several more. Filling the docks is our main source of income during the summer but covering our members is first priority. Norm Kuesel our new treasurer has been updating programs for financials along with membership information. He has spent hours creating new spreadsheets so we have a much better picture of how the club is performing now and in the future. These documents can also be utilized for future planning. Our 2012 budget was completed in November and John Wierzchowski, the budget committee along with Norm have developed an excellent plan. We will be voting on accepting the budget at the Land cruise. Membership renewals are coming in strong. Over 80% so far. Thanks to those who have sent those in on time. Did you Forget?? There is still time to get them in before penalties apply. Tony Dolejs our Rear Commodore has been receiving quotes for Bug Control. We should land on a company soon so they can get started in early spring. Tony is also working on a process to assure us of good drinking water when chlorine levels are off balance. This spring we will have key cards for entering the building. In the next few months we will be discussing and creating a plan to activate member’s cards. We’ll keep you posted on our plan. The board is in discussions with the Past Commodores and Planning Committee on a new grill pavilion. At the November meeting a plan was presented by the PC’s and blueprints are being drawn up so approvals can be granted by the state and county. We finally will have an enclosed grilling area off the back deck which will be much easier to use and protect our expensive grills. Let’s all give the Past Commodores support for their programs to help fund this project and others. Dave Zgrabik has volunteered to create our yearbook in 2012. He also is developing a new program for the yearbook which will save us money on printing and that can be used in years to come. Dave has been one of our photographers at club events the past few years and we are fortunate to have him on this project. Have you signed up for the Land Cruise in February? Make sure you get those applications in by January 27th. This year’s event will be at Catawba Island Club in Port Clinton. CIC is a private upscale club on the west side of Catawba Island and you’ll be impressed with the facility, food and service. Need an application? Go to our web site and click on events, then click Land Cruise and an application will appear. Look forward to seeing all of you February 11th at CIC. Dress is business casual. Still seeking help for entertainment for 2012. Can you help? We need help with food weekends of Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Also, can you help us plan our Summer Cruises? Contact me at commodore@mbiyc.com. Our club is successful because of our members planning and participation. We need your help. As you can see all of us on the board are working hard to update systems and procedures to make the club run smoothly. Again our goal is providing you our members, a modern facility where you can relax and enjoy the island life. Keep watching the website for updates. Commodore Don Stouder FROM THE DESK OF THE COMMODORE - 11/20/2011 All Members: After the recent Board of Directors meeting it was decided that we should convey discussions that took place and pass them along to the members. As you are all interested in what your board is doing over the winter, we are spending considerable time on the building, docks, and overall operations of the club. Some of those topics are, simplify procedures, cost savings, maintenance, and keeping the club in top shape for our members and guests. This takes a lot of planning. We have a much larger operation than in the past. Another piece, we are paying close attention to is our short term and long term liabilities. With the new budget for 2012 we have that in place. This will be presented at the land cruise for approval. Here is a summary of the topics discussed by officer.COMMODORE DON STOUDER FROM THE DESK OF THE VICE COMMODORE - 11/28/2011 Greetings to the MBIYC Membership The dock committee is busy this time of year gathering dockage agreements for dock rental in 2012. For those of you who are base and seasonal dockers and have received a contract, make sure they are sent back ASAP or another member will be assigned that dock. Dock rentals did extremely well this year and our plan is to continue the same track next year. Also our new reservation program helped a lot of you come over for the weekend and enjoy our club. At the past board of directors meeting we discussed current dock rates, plus ways to move the dock waiting list along. For those of you who don’t know, here are the rates.
This is the challenge we face. Although nothing will change in 2012, the dock committee and board are looking at changes in 2013. Advertising has gone out for a new dock master in 2012. Deadline for applicants is January 25th. After that we will interview qualified candidates and make a decision by end of January. After meeting with Butch in November he has chosen to accept another job in 2012. We are pricing out bumpers for upright dock posts and if it makes sense and the budget permits. Also are planning to fix some of the electrical pods next year on the docks and any other maintenance required. Check on the web site for updated information. Have a good winter and hope to see you at the Land Cruise. Thank You All, Your Devoted Vice Commodore. VICE COMMODORE ART SCHROEDER FROM THE DESK OF THE REAR COMMODORE - 11/20/2011 OPERATIONS MANUAL- I have begun to develop an operations manual for the Club to facilitate future transitions in the Job of Rear Commodore. Additionally we will begin documenting procedures and processes. LAWN MAINTENANCE- To date, three applications of targeted weed control have been applied to the lawn. In addition one partial seeding has also been applied by Doug Brown from Naturescape. Additional seeding to be completed in the spring. SECURITY- Discussions have been held for upgrading our security to key cards. The plan calls for an initial purchase of 1000 key cards at the beginning of the year. Next spring members will have key cards for access to the building. DRINKING WATER- It appears that the State is struggling with trying to keep safe levels of chlorination in the Marina water system during slow demand periods such as late fall. Certain times of the year the water is not potable. We are looking at possibly bottled water for the members during those times. Other items discussed, ways of reducing cost of trash pickup, methods in keeping the grass watered during extreme dry spells. In the future months, we will continue to add information on the website concerning discussions and plans. Keep in mind, your board is continuing to work over the winter. We thank you for your support and realize many people have opinions, comments, suggestions and we continue listening to constructive conversation. Our goal is to provide the entire membership with a comfortable, clean, up to date club house and facility which you can come over relax enjoy and be proud to be a member of MBIYC. REAR COMMODORE TONY DOLEJS FROM THE DESK OF THE TREASURER - 11/12/2011
Middle Bass Island Yacht Club As we transition into 2012, I’m pleased to report that MBIYC is well positioned financially to support club activities now and into the future. As of 11/11/11, the club recorded annual income of $177,127 supported by membership dues/fees, annual dock rentals, transient dock rentals and ship’s store sales. Transient dock receipts and the ship’s store both did well in 2011 and we need to maintain this momentum into 2012. Operational expenses for the club amounted to $150,426 through 11/11/11 with the majority of these expenses being principal and interest for the clubhouse/docks loan. Additional significant expenses included clubhouse insurance, the marina lease through the State of Ohio (ODNR), utilities, dockmaster wages/taxes and building maintenance/supplies. Net income for the club, including December commitments, is estimated at $18,106. Final accounting details will be available by 01/15/12. With a new club house to call home, net worth for MBIYC is currently estimated at $473,458. This figure includes clubs assets such as bank accounts, clubhouse, docks and equipment. Documented liabilities include the bank loan as well as the commitment to pay back the bond money, including interest, to the members who graciously committed their hard earned dollars to the building fund. Financial goals for 2012 include; Maintaining payments for the clubhouse/docks loan, Savings to cover bond payments with the goal of retiring 20% of the total each year starting in 2013, Investigating options to refinance the club house loan, Investigating options to reduce operational costs, Supporting the planning committee recommendations for enhancements to the clubhouse and grounds (landscaping, deck lighting, security system, additional deck chairs, table umbrellas, outside speaker system and a small freezer for storing event food/supplies) as well as supporting the new grill area to be planned and implemented by the Past Commodores. As you can see, 2012 is shaping up to be an exciting year at MBIYC. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I would be more than happy to share details and answer any questions upon request. Respectfully Submitted, TREASURER NORM KEUSEL
